A shield maiden blessed by the gods battles to unite a nation under a power-hungry king - while also fighting her growing desire for his fiery son - in this Norse-inspired fantasy romance from the bestselling author of The Bridge Kingdom series.
Bound in an unwanted marriage, Freya spends her days gutting fish, but dreams of becoming a warrior. And of putting an axe in her boorish husband's back.
Freya's dreams abruptly become reality when her husband betrays her to the region's jarl, landing her in a fight to the death against his son. To survive, Freya is forced to reveal her deepest secret: she possesses a drop of a goddess's blood, which gives her magic capable of repelling any attack. A
magic that was foretold would unite the fractured nation of Skaland beneath a king-the one who controls the shield maiden's fate.
Believing he's destined to rule Skaland, the fanatical jarl binds Freya with a blood oath and orders his son, Bjorn, to protect Freya from their enemies. Desperate to prove her strength, Freya must train to fight and learn to control her magic, all while facing perilous tests set by the gods. Except the greatest test of all may be resisting her forbidden attraction to Bjorn. If Freya succumbs to her lust for the charming and fierce warrior, she risks not only her own destiny but the fate of all the people she swore to protect.

Moderate level of spice in the final chapters of the book and I enjoyed the story.
Vikings with god powers what’s not to like. I love banter and a strong woman who will say her piece no matter if it lands her in a sticky situation. Freya went from being a fish wife to becoming one of the most feared shield maiden. Her powers were more than what everyone thought possible. Freya goes through so much betrayal, but the betrayal from the one she gave herself to hurt most of all. Can Freya bring all the clans together and fulfill her destiny, or will she be become another to fall victim to men who want power x
The action was good. The elements of Norse mythology were good. The suspense and intrigue were good. The angst and longing between Freya and Bjorn were good. Freya being a bad-ass sword-wielding shield maiden was good. What I struggled with was her naivety or was it deliberate blindness to the glaringly obvious? That was frustrating as was some of the repetitive back and forth of the internal monologue.
“You are mine, Born-in-Fire. Even if only the two of us know it” 😭🖤This was my first Viking romantasy book and oh my did it deliver. I thought I maybe wouldn’t love it as much as my beloved Viking tv shows & films but honestly? I was a fool. An utter fool because this exceeded them on every single level.I was drawn in from the very first page & immediately hooked on the tension between Freya & Byorn. A perfect slow burn with banter I genuinely couldn’t get enough of. It comes as no surprise that I am infact, utterly obsessed with them 🥹World building? Loved. Characters? Obsessed.Pacing? Perfect. Plot? GIVE ME MOREThe plot twists are SO GOOD.. and that ending?!!?Im a mix of why the hell did I wait this long to read it but also kinda hate myself for not waiting until may to read it so I could dive straight into the sequel because I actually have zero patience and Im chomping at the bit because I need to know what happens immediately!!!!!BUT then also I don’t regret it because I had the absolute best time with this book and now I’m so hyped for A Curse Carved In Bone that I’ll 100% be taking the entire day to binge it. 😌5 ⭐️ read. All. Day. Long.
Well written. Fast paced. I liked the characters. Looking forward to book 2!
