In war-torn Anwyvn, fear of maegic plagues every corner of the kingdom and halflings like Rhya Fleetwood are hunted and killed.
When Rhya is sentenced to death, her execution is interrupted by an unexpected savior, the formidable Commander Scythe – a merciless fighter on the battlefield, Scythe is far more terrifying than the hangman’s noose.
In the clutches of this new enemy, Rhya finds herself forced to travel to the Northlands with her fearsome captor.
But she is no ordinary halfling. The strange birthmark on her chest and the wind she instinctively calls forth means she is a Remnant.
One of four souls fated to restore the balance of maegic . . . or die trying.
But mastering this power is only the beginning.
A forbidden desire for the Commander starts to burn fiercely while this tempest within her is waiting to be released.
And Rhya must choose: her heart or the Kingdom?

I'm really conflicted about this one. Where this book really shines is with the world and the magic system. I love the idea of four fated elemental remnants who are constantly replaced when they die - and the way each remnant has its own element-related characteristics and interactions with the other remnants was such a neat touch. I loved the descriptions of the world as Rhya travelled through it as well, finally ending at Caeldera, the most unique and gorgeous city I've read about in a long time. I would loooove to see some fanart of it because WOW, my jaw dropped when it was first described. However, the romance was not romancing. I spent most of the book furious about how Penn was treating Rhya - cold and controlling and telling her absolutely nothing, and somehow expecting her to just accept it. Even once they were past the initial hostage stage he continued to treat her like nothing more than his pet to lock away, feeding her the tiniest breadcrumbs of affection to try and keep her obedient. And despite this treatment she still gets the hots for him? There's no way! She had more chemistry with Soren than with Penn. I wouldn't have minded so much but I feel like Penn's control over her really limited the best parts of the story - we barely got to learn anything about the world or her remnant powers because he kept her untrained and tightly controlled.Overall for me it was an enjoyable read for the fantasy side of things, but the romance was a bit of a let down.
Great start to a new series. There wasn't much I didn't like about this book. I liked the different characters, each of their read, the monsters (although feel there could be more) and the developing storyline. The slow romance didn't annoy me like some do and happy it wasn't filled with spice. Lots to still explore though and hope it isn't too long of a wait for the next book!
My first book from Julie Johnson and she certainly nailed it for me! I'm so picky with romantasy's these days but I had so much fun reading this one.Halflings like Rhya Fleetwood are killed on sight. But Rhya’s execution is interrupted by an unexpected savior—one far more terrifying than her would-be killers. The mysterious and mercenary, Commander Scythe. In the clutches of this new enemy, Rhya finds herself fighting for her life in the barren reaches of the Northlands. However, Rhya is no ordinary halfling. The strange birthmark on her chest and the wind she instinctively calls forth means she is a Remnant, one of four souls scattered across Anwyvn, fated to restore the balance of maegic…or die trying. This book does have a slow start but I enjoyed both the FMC and MMC so much that I didn't mind. Upon the introduction of the side characters, this book went from a low 4 star to a 5 star for me.The romance was such a sloooooooooow burn which I absolutely adore. Commander Scythe was just the perfect amount of grumpy and protective, and I'm eager to learn more about his history with the previous Wind Weaver (SUSPICIOUS SIDE EYE).I don't want to say too much as this book is perfect if you have no expectations however I'm so eager for book 2, I need to know more about the other remnants stat!
I thoroughly enjoyed reading The Wind Weaver! The world was intriguing, the characters likeable and it is well written. I liked the slow build of the romance, how the story unfolded and how there are lots of curiosities to unpack in future books (which I'm eagerly awaiting). The whole journey was 5 star for me.
This book hooked me from the first chapter. I finished it in two days because I just couldn’t stop reading. The plot flows smoothly, and the world-building and characters pull you in effortlessly. It’s well written, and the pacing keeps you engaged throughout. I really connected with Rhya; she’s warm, authentic, and brings out the best in the people around her, you learn with her as the story goes on which I love in a fantasy read with elemental powers, its like your finding out with her. Pen was exactly the kind of character this story needed to start his character off. Can definitely see a love triangle forming! such an amazing read!
